Wailuku attorney Kirstin Hamman was appointed Friday to be a 2nd Circuit District Court judge.
Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald made the appointment to fill the vacancy created by the August retirement of Family Court Judge Keith Tanaka.
“I’m just honored to be chosen,” Hamman said Friday. “All of the other candidates were more than qualified. I look forward to the Senate confirmation hearing and getting to work full time as a judge.”
Hamman has served as a per diem, or part-time, District Court judge since July 2014. She also has a private practice focusing on family and special education law.
She previously worked as an attorney with the Maui Office of Council Services, the Public Defender’s Office and the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii.
Hamman was a law clerk for now-retired 2nd Circuit Judge Boyd Mossman and the Hawaii Civil Rights Commission.
She is a member of the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates and serves on the board of Horizons Academy of Maui. She is vice chairwoman of the County Commission on Children and Youth and is secretary of the Maui County Bar Association.
Hamman is a graduate of the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and was admitted to the bar in 1997.
If confirmed by the state Senate, Hamman will serve a term of six years.
The chief justice appoints District Court judges from a list of at least six nominees submitted by the Judicial Selection Commission.
