Three Maui residents were killed in a head-on collision in Lahaina early Wednesday morning, according to the Maui Police Department.
Police said that at 3:08 a.m., a gold 2007 Ford Escape MPVH, driven by a 22-year-old Kihei man, was traveling north on Honoapiilani Highway at a high rate of speed when he crossed left of center and crashed head-on into a grey 2016 Kia Soul MPVH that was traveling south on the highway. The collision occurred about 341 feet south of Kikowaena Way.
The Escape caught on fire, engulfing the vehicle. Maui Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and extinguished the fire. The driver of the Escape was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
The driver of the Soul, an 81-year-old man, and his 75-year-old female passenger, both of Lahaina, sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene, police said.
The identities of all three individuals are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
According to a preliminary investigation, the driver of the Soul was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, while the passenger was not.
It is unknown if the driver of the Escape was wearing a seat belt.
Airbags in both vehicles deployed.
Police said speed is believed to be a factor in the crash. The involvement of alcohol and drugs is pending toxicology results.
There have now been 11 traffic fatalities in Maui County in 2023, compared to 13 at the same time last year.
